KNEC was established under KNEC Cap 225A following breakup of the East African Community. The single system of education, the 7-4-2-3 was examined. Exams offered were East African Certificate of Primary Education (EACPE) East African Certificate of Education Examination (EACE) East African Advanced Certificate of Education (EAACE).

- A total of 1,693 candidates scored Grade A (plain).
- The number of students achieving grades C+ and above—qualifying them for university admission—stood at 246,391.
- However, there were issues with academic integrity: 2,829 candidates’ results were withheld due to suspected cheating, and 840 results were cancelled for confirmed malpractices.
